When blonde hair turns green!

My family and I just returned from a fantastic vacation in the Turks & Caicos! What I liked best was being outside all day long. New York can be cold and gray in the winter, so it was nice to be in a sunny place where being outside was so appealing! We had so much fun playing on the beach, diving into the ocean, and of course playing in the pool. As a matter of fact, I think the kids spent more time underwater than anywhere else!

The only drawback of all this water play is that my kids’ hair, which is gorgeously white-blonde, tends to turn green in reaction to the chlorine in the pool! Literally, we watched my daughter’s hair go from her normal golden platinum blonde to greenish and then completely green! The staff at the resort kept complimenting her on it and asking if she had died it. They thought it was a fashion statement! It definitely looked trendy (a real downtown kid!) but it’s not exactly the look we were going for.

I did some research online and found out that they make shampoos specifically designed to remove the green tint from blonde hair. More importantly, they also make a product called AquaGuard Hair Defense that prevents blonde hair from turning green in the first place! I also found this amazing handy little travel set – chlorine removal shampoo, chlorine removal conditioner, chlorine removal body wash and body lotion! How neat is that! Now in terms of actually removing the green, my daughter definitely needed a shampoo that could get the job done in one wash (her hair was lime green and she had no patience for several days of special shampoo). TRISWIM Chlorine Removal Shampoo got it off in one wash and I really liked the smell of their products. We used the shampoo first and then finished off with the conditioner. I also used the TRISWIM Chlorine Removal Body Wash on her once, to remove any remaining traces of chlorine.

For my son who is 5 and has really short hair, I researched organic options. His hair was not as green as my daughter’s, but I wanted to make sure all the chemicals were gone. I found a line of products called Babo Botanicals, which is plant-based and especially formulated for children. Their swim shampoo contains cucumber, aloe vera, chamomile and calendula (click the images below to shop). I loved the gentle formula and lovely smell. It also comes with a conditioner and a detangling spray which would be ideal for a toddler child with longer hair. While I was shopping for shampoo, I ended up also buying their zinc based baby sunscreen and their Miracle moisturizing cream with oatmeal… they both smell amazing!!!

With all these new products, my kids’ beautiful white-blonde hair color has returned. And I feel that my family is now prepared for our next pool and beach vacation! You can bet I’ll be putting those wonderful products on our family vacation packing list! No more green hair for us!
