305 Fitness has a few locations in New York, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., and Boston. The one that I like is the one close to my house, on 8th Street. It’s right next to Dominos Pizza. You can’t miss it. There’s a giant pink neon sign that says Girls, Girls, Girls at the very front!
The signature cardio class at 305 Fitness is a 55-minute class that’s structured as follows: 30 minutes dance cardio (with a 5-minute high-intensity sprint in the middle of the 30 minutes), 5 minutes weights, 15 minutes mellow hip-hop choregraphy, and a 5-minute cool-down. The class structure, I have to say, is really well done, because it keeps people like me (who don’t love cardio!) from getting bored. First of all, it’s dance, so it changes all the time, and it’s more fun than, say – one hour of jumping jacks or running on a treadmill! Second, I love the high-intensity sprints and the 5 minutes of weights in the middle, because it breaks it up, and it gives you something to look forward to.
The studio is pretty neat. Although the entrance is on the ground floor, the classes take place in the basement. The music is loud and there are no windows. There’s a live DJ in every class and there are multi-colored lights, which makes it feel like a club. The crowd is heavily female, with a mix of NYU students, locals, and neighborhood moms. Outfit-wise, I’d call it sassy-trendy. Their motto is “Make Sweat Sexy” so think crop tops over sports bras, short shorts, and anything with neon, so it shines in the dark when the nightclub lights come on!
The choreography is fun, but simple. It’s all based on 4 counts. Anyone can pick it up. It’s reminiscent of an old-school aerobics class, but the music is current and trendy. All in all, if you’re looking for a cardio class, this one is a great one to try! The vibe is really great. It’s super welcoming. No one cares if you mess up. I’ve been to cardio dance classes where the instructor makes a face if you don’t do the choreography exactly right. This class isn’t like that. They refreshingly don’t take themselves too seriously… which is the way every class should be!
