My morning beauty routine

I’ve always been obsessive about having a great beauty routine, because I was taught early on that well-hydrated skin = skin that will look beautiful now and later! So when yesterday at the playground, a babysitter in her early 20’s approached me, told me that my skin looked “flawless” and asked me what products I use – I felt validated!!!… and I thought it would be fun to share how I take care of my skin every day.

First, the boring (but true) stuff!!! Beauty comes from the inside, and I think it’s difficult to have great skin if you don’t eat well (I’ll write more posts about which super-foods give you great skin!!) Also, remember that sleep is your ally, my friend; we all have our challenges, whether it’s a baby who doesn’t sleep through the night, a boss who calls at all hours, or papers to write through the night… but nothing will give you baby skin like a great night’s sleep! And then finally… go easy on your lifestyle choices… too much fun at happy hour will do a real number on your skin, so keep that in mind when you place your order!

Now that the boring stuff is out of the way… let’s move on to the fun stuff!

The first thing I do when I wake up is drink a tall glass of water – before I even get out of bed! I think that’s a French thing!! Every French magazine says it, and I got into the habit when I was in my teens. You can add a squeeze of lemon to the water, it helps drain out all the impurities from your body, but frankly – I don’t have time to go to the kitchen, so I just gulp down a small bottle of Evian that I leave by my bed the night before.

Then I clean my face with a super gentle cleanser. I haven’t been loyal to one brand over the years, and I also feel that my skincare needs have changed through adulthood, pregnancy, nursing, motherhood, etc! But what I always look for is something gentle and not too harsh on the skin. Here are a few of my favorites. The one I’m using right now is the first one, by Dior – … Love it!! And I also especially recommend the ones by Charlotte Tilbury and Natura Bisse.

The third step is a Serum. I love, love, love serums because they provide so much nourishment to the skin without feeling heavy! Literally you just put them on, they disappear into your pores, they do their job and it’s like nothing’s even there except a beautiful glow! My favorite one is the La Mer (below). Okay, it’s very, very expensive but it’s worth its weight in gold! I started using it in my twenties as soon as I could afford it, and I think it’s one of the reason why my skin looks the way it does today. The other options below are also very good – I use the the NV Perricone one when I travel because the bottle travels well, and I also love the Dior one (I keep that one in my other bathroom)!

Once the serum is on, I hop into the shower, brush my teeth, etc.

Before putting on my makeup, the final step to my skincare routine is a really good day cream! I tap my face to make sure the serum has completely penetrated into my skin. Then I put on a small amount of cream all over my face with special attention to the temples, cheeks, and under the eyes. I go easy on the mid-line (center of forehead, nose and chin). The queen of day creams (in my opinion!) is the La Prairie White Caviar. Again it’s pricey, but when I started using it, people noticed, and asked me if I was doing anything special to my skin! I think it really makes a difference! I also recommend the Capture Totale by Christian Dior which I totally adore.

After that, I’m ready for makeup and I have to say that most days, my skin looks so bright and even that I can skip wearing any foundation at all… which was the case yesterday when the babysitter complimented me on my glowing skin! I skip foundation and go straight to bronzer, lips and eye makeup. It really makes things easy in the morning!

Trust me, if you invest in a good skin care routine every morning and night, you will never regret it! It’s really worth the investment! I will post soon about my night-time skincare routine. In the meantime, let me know if you have any questions!
