My husband and I are in the process of building a beach house in a little town where we’ve been vacationing for years. Up until now, our house was a small summer cottage that was super cute but very tiny. I’ve always wondered what I would do if I had a great big kitchen that I could design from the ground up… and now it looks like it’s about to happen! As a result, I’ve been scouring design magazines and websites for kitchen inspiration.
The first thing that I notice when I walk into a large kitchen is the material used for the countertops and the island. Over the years, in our city apartment, our country home and our beach cottage, we’ve had various stone countertops, and my favorite is definitely honed white marble. I’m not too crazy about granite (although it is more durable) and I don’t love polished marble (although that’s what we chose for our kitchen in the city).
The second thing I notice is the color of the kitchen cabinets. I love white, but recently I’ve noticed that in many white kitchens, the cabinets under the island are painted a different color. I’ve seen pale blue and light gray and I love both – so this is something I’ll be exploring until we make a decision.
Finally, I’m a sucker for awesome light fixtures. They really make or break a room. I’m in the market for really cool light fixtures to hang over the kitchen island. Hopefully they’ll light up some wonderful times with family, friends, food and wine over the next decade or so.
Here are some of my inspiration pictures. I found most of them on Pinterest. Please feel free to share your own in the comment section below!
